New Year, New Outlook

Wow the holidays are over and here I am at the new year! Time flies. And like they say, the older you get the faster it goes! And how true. So, if time does fly by the best I can do is make the most of our time.

With the New Year I plan to have a New Outlook. Most of what I have seen lately has been from a positive attitude aspect. I vow to continue with such an attitude! It seems to me the only way to go.

A New Year and New Outlook is not a new concept, but a great way to start the year. An attitude of gratitude, be thankful for what you have and being positive is a great way to live.

One of the many reason I love visiting our home on the lake is we do not have cable TV!! Pretty primative! But one of the many great things about this is we don't spend a great deal of our time in front of the TV and all the negative news. I absolutely do not miss it! After returning from the lake this past week the fact that the negative press was missing from my life and the positive impact it had really came to my attention. Thus another reason for emphasizing the positive in life and focusing on a new way of thinking and approaching life.

Happy New Year. When we are given something new, we are given something with a lot of potential. It is up to us how we use that something new. Take the new year and make it the best. Have a great day.

Glass Half Full vs Glass Half Empty

I know it takes two to make a relationship work. And most times the difference in the personalities is what adds spice and makes the relationship keep from getting stale. But sometimes the difference between a person who is always looking at the glass as half empty vs the other person always looking at the glass as half full can really be trying for the person who always looks at most situations as the glass as half full.

Good lord, does everything have to be a challenge?! Life is what it is, take it and go on. For pity sake, I get so tired of those around who always look at things as Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh! Someone near and dear to me is that way. It seems so many times that he has a load on his back from taking everything on as "the next job" or "the next problem". I, well, I just see it as the next item in life.

Don't get me wrong there is a lot of stuff that I don't like or want to do. But looking at everyday tasks as something positive is so much more healthy.

Just like packing up after vacation. Why does that have to be negative? Perhaps it is his way of dealing with the goodbyes and the end. I just look at it as a time to relive the memories in my mind as I pack. Packing after vacation is o.k., especially when it has been fun, why can't packing be fun too? I am just grateful I have something to pack, a place over my head, healthy kids we enjoy, etc. So many people in this world do not have all of this. So even the simple, somewhat boring tasks are not bad for me. The glass if half full, and always ready to be filled with more!!!

We all have those "Ah, Ha" moments in our lives. I am so glad I had mine several years ago. Looking most challenges in life from a positive stand point has really helped me weather some real challenges. I believe it has even helped turned some potentially bad issues into positive or helped them go away.

As I sit here and watch the sun come up over the horizon, I am so grateful for this day and all the work ahead. The only time I really worry about the glass being half empty most days any more is when my wine glass is getting low, now that always seems to be a glass half empty! Cheers to today, all my blessings and being blessed to be born in this great country. Have a half full day!! I know I will.

Now, if the federal government really wants to do something useful!

I for one do not think we need another government agency. I worked for the federal government for 35 years and know first hand another agency is not something this country needs. Some things the government needs to stay out of and people need to be responsible for themselves, not expect the government to take care of things. I think they have proven that is not the best route.

But you know, what I do think is the government could make themselves useful and outlaw some things that are just not right. Like for instance, all the different shades of black, navy etc there are in the fashion world. Is that not an injustice! Sometimes shopping to match something you would think as simple as navy pants or a jacket can be a nightmare. And at some point in your quest you may have to concede and acknowledge you will never find a match. Now there's something the government could put their teeth in!!! Help us most unfortunate when it comes to something like this. Plus from a GREEN standpoint, it would save a lot of time and energy!

I was recently shopping for some items to decorate my newest derby hat and realized how many different shades of hot pink there are! I love all the derby hats and enjoy decorating my hat myself. But while shopping yesterday I found myself wishing I had brought along the main flower I was using for the hat. I began doubting myself as to what shade of pink it was!!! We should not have to endure such hardships! Where is the government when you need them, what are they doing about this!

As many of you know, I love to put a different twist on things, my mind works in very strange ways. Just like my description on what "torture" really is. If you have not read that blog you should, it is time to shop for swim suits and that blog says it all.

Many probably thought, o.k., now Diane is going to really get political here. Sorry, just had a thought and went with it. Have a great day, looks at things differently today, and smile, laugh, it sure makes things better and may turn your day around.

Need Help? Ask a Woman!

Women are so giving. I was attending a professional women's luncheon the other day and the speaker was discussing networking etc. One thing she said was so true. Women are so giving and so willing to help. Just mention to another woman you have a problem or need help, and they most likely will help or have a solution or suggestion as to how you can solve the problem. But, she pointed out, most women have difficulty in asking for help. How true.

Look all around you, in your community as in mine there are so many women making an impact in the lives of others.

A group I recently learned about here in our community is Women4Women. This month they are hosting a 5K Walk, Run & Festival which will benefit several organizations that help women. Not only will the proceeds benefit several organizations that help others, but the event will also have a festival type atmosphere with booths to include organizations in our community that help others.

I have witnessed so many times how women are always so eager to help others. After all, who heads up your PTA, most non-profits and are always eager to organize when others are in need?

I saw this in action when Shannon White started up Dress for Success here in Louisville. She was a stay at home mom who wanted to donate some suits. When seeking out a Dress for Success to donate to, the home office suggested she start one here. She did and now they are a significant Non-profit here that has impacted a number of women's lives and in turn helped play a part in improving the lives of them and their families.

Last year Kim and I just wanted to get a few women together we grew up with for dinner. That one dinner grew into an annual charity event. Women just can't get together without a lot of great ideas being discussed. Out of that dinner, we created the South End Girls Unite event. Last year the group raised money for Gilda's Club Louisville. It was great fun and very successful.

This year the group will be hosting an event again in September. The South End Girls Unite event will be September 20 at the Shively Community Center. Watch our site, www.bikinisandbifocals.com for more information. This year we will be raising money for Women4Women. This is a great organization plus it falls right in line with what we are all about at Bikinis and Bifocals, women helping women make connections that make a difference!

I think it is awesome the way women are so giving and always helping others. But we need to remember to ask for help. I know I am guilty of that and will make more efforts in remembering to ask for what I need or for help. Remember when you see women working so hard to help others, they can always use help and support for what they are doing.

Keep up the great work ladies, you make such a difference.

The Law of Attraction!

Isn't it amazing how things come about in your life? Do you believe you bring them about or it is just fate? Over the past couple years I have read a lot, AND experienced a lot, about the Law of Attraction in my life and others. I do believe there is something to changing your outlook towards life and how it can bring about great change in your life. I have seen it happen for me!

I get so many emails. Just the other day I received a mass distribution email from a good friend. It was spreading the word about a speaker who was to be in town. Well of course the title caught my attention. The topic to be covered was the Law of Attraction.

Of course I shared this with Kim, my friend who also believes in this and the power of positive attitude. I asked if she wanted to attend. I had already planned to attend whether I could get someone to go with me or not. Not surprising, her instant response was, "Sign me up!"

I now regret that I did not pass the message on to everyone else I know. Since I could not attest to the quality of the speaker, and there was a charge for the workshop, I hesitated. For some reason I held back and did not pass the word on. My Bad, I should have had a more positive attitude right! Oh well, even we optimist fall short some days.

Well, I have to report, the event was well worth my time and money. In fact, I probably saw about 20 people I knew at this event. (We positive attitude people seem to drift to the same type events!) The workshop was hosted at the Unity Church of Louisville in downtown Louisville. I have never attended the church, but others in attendance said they have many worthwhile events and programs at this church. It is small, but the seating was comfortable and the sound good.

The speaker was Michael Losier, author of the book Law of Attraction. If you have heard of the Secret? Well this book tells you how to put the elements of what they speak of in the Secret into play in your life. He had such a great way of presenting and a very simple and usable method for this way of attracting good into your life.

As a speaker I always tell participants that everything they attend they should view as a tool. It may be that some things you learn or hear in a seminar you put into work instantly and some you place away for future use. But one thing is, it is always worth your time if you go away with one new tool to use.

Well the workshop was late on a Thursday evening, but he kept me engaged. And wow, did I take way some items that have helped me in this journey. Everyday we learn something new don't we! I now have a much better appreciation for the expression, What do you want? - Not What don't you want. I now am focusing more on what I want!

Isn't it crazy how life plays out. When we first arrived at the event, they were selling his book and having a book signing. I told Kim, I think I have that book, and you bought it for me! She said really, it does look a little familiar. When I got home that night I checked my office, and yes, there it was, I had the book. But as I have told many, I am more a book on tape, can multi task that way, instead of a book reader. But the thing I discovered at the workshop is, his book is also a type of workbook to get you through the process of incorporating the law of attraction in your life. This is one book I now will take the time to read and use.

Check it out, Law of Attraction, The Science of Attracting More of What you Want and Less of What you Don't Want. I wish I had had my daughter there with me. I saw many women there with their daughters. How I wish I knew then what I know now! But that is the past and I love what I know now. My current question I ask myself everyday? So, what do I want?

If you get the opportunity to hear Michael speak, I highly recommend you invest the time and money. It may change your life forever. He is telling you what the Secret is and how to put it to play in your life. Have a great day, Diane

I love Dave Ramsey!

Many people already know this, even my husband, that I love Dave Ramsey. He is so awesome. For those of you who do not know, Dave Ramsey is a personal money-management expert, an extremely popular national radio personality and best-selling author of The Total Money Makeover. In his latest book, a follow-up of his enormously successful New York Times best-sellers Financial Peace and More Than Enough, Ramsey exemplifies his life's work of teaching others how to be financially responsible, so they can acquire enough wealth to take care of loved ones, live prosperously into old age, and give generously to others.

Tonight Dave Ramsey is hosting a live event called Town Hall for Hope, The Economy, Real Money, Real Answers. Go to the website and check the locations where it will be hosted. This event is free. I just checked my zip code and there are over 10 sites hosting this webinar tonight out in the rural area in which I live! That is so exciting. There are also radio stations broadcasting the event.

Dave has a very positive attitude and approach in life. Take control of your life and destiny. If you do you will impact not only your life but the life of your children, their children etc. We hear so much doom and gloom about the economy. This is an effort to encourage people not to give into this.

Dave will address the nation live with straight talk about what's really going on with the economy. He will discuss the history of the economy, real stats, and steps to take toward hope! Plus, he will answer questions from all around the country. You can submit questions via email, Face book, Twitter, and YouTube. Don’t miss it, could change your life!

Several years ago my husband and I attended one of his workshops at our church and it absolutely changed our lives. But, I have to admit; I did not go willingly or really know what I was getting into when we decided to attend the workshop. For weeks as we would be leaving church, my husband would bring into the conversation, “let’s sign up for this money management class”. Instantly I wanted to say NO, NO, not another one of those classes where after 5 minutes it is so over my head I zone out. In fact for weeks, I just nodded and would change the subject. That was all I needed was another thing to commit to. But, for some reason, I think it was because my husband had been reading all the details about the course and Dave Ramsey, he kept suggesting it to me each week as we left church. At one point he said, I think it will be good for us and our marriage. Finally, one Sunday, I relented and said, o.k., I’ll do it.

Well long story short, as I said in the above paragraph, it changed our lives. It was an awesome program. Not once was it over my head, and it was exciting to see our efforts and time invested in the class pay off. So many in the group who were our age said, I wish I had know all this when I was younger. And to our delight there were two newly wed couples in the class and a few young single adults. We all kept telling them that this will change their lives forever.

I always love listening to him on the radio when I can, his advice is so great. We can take control of our destiny and so many people do. I love to hear the success stories and I almost tear up when the families call in and tell their stories and get to shout “We’re debt FREE”!

Can’t wait to see what he says tonight. We as American’s need to take control back from all the politicians who want to ruin this country. Take control America, learn what is going on and take control of your destiny. Thanks Dave, America loves you.

Tell me Something Positive

One of my morning rituals is to turn on the TV and listen to the news as background. This morning, however, I had second thoughts about turning on the TV. My initial thought this morning was do I really want to turn the TV on? Everything on the news is so negative. Do I really want to start my day today with negative thoughts and feelings? Just tell me something positive for once was my last thought as, out of habit, I found the remote and turned on the TV.

Wow, what a surprise when the TV came on. Fox News was interviewing the men who initiated the Grateful Nation Montana movement. Grateful Nation Montana was formed for the specific purpose of facilitating college educations for the children of soldiers killed while on active duty in Iraq or Afghanistan. This was started by two insurance professionals, David Bell and John McCarrick, who wanted to do something for the families of our fallen soldiers. Talk about something positive.

These men have started such a wonderful initiative in this country. In fact, it has been recognized as such a positive initiative, that they are constantly being called for info on how other states can start the same thing. According to their website, they are working with professionals to develop guidance so others can do this within their states.

This story was a great way to start my day. It made me grateful to be in a country of such wonderful giving people. We have so much to be thankful for and this is a great program to show our thanks to those who lost their lives for our country.

Items such as this make me reflect and look for ways I can give back. Writing a check has become too easy. I was fortunate enough to get an email when I got to work that invited me to join a group of professionals in support of a new Career Center our local Dress for Success affiliate is setting up. I love the organization Dress for Success and what they stand for and all that they do. I am so honored to know there is something that I can do to contribute to their organization with something other than clothes or money. For a rainy morning, the day was getting better all the time.

After having these two items brought to my attention this morning, I found myself reflecting on something I read through last night. A good friend of mine, Carol Dawson, started an initiative with her local paper a couple years ago. It is The Extra Milers column she writes once a month that highlights those in her southern Indiana community who go the EXTRA MILE to make a positive difference. I have heard her speak of it often, but have never taken the time to check it out. Last night I took the time to find the link to her articles and read over several she has logged in over the last couple years. To say the least it was humbling to see all the different types of people, many very humble, who in their own way are doing something to make this world a better place.

I love this story Carol tells at most of her seminars, it says a lot about her and about those she writes about as well as others like the men in Montana who are making a difference in the world, one life at a time.

Do Something to Make a Difference in Another Person’s Life
Once upon a time there was a wise man that used to go to the ocean to do his writing. One day he was walking along the shore. As he looked down the beach, he saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself to think of someone dancing on the beach. So he began to walk
faster to catch up with this person. As he got closer he saw that it was a young woman and she
wasn’t dancing, but instead she was reaching down to the shore, picking up something and very
gently throwing it into the ocean. As he got even closer, he called out, “Good Morning, what are
you doing?” The young woman paused, looked up and replied, “Throwing starfish back into the
ocean.” He asked, “Why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?” She replied, “The sun is up
and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them back in, they will die.” The man was intrigued and stated, “But, young lady, don’t you realize that there are miles and miles of beach and starfish are all along it. You can’t possibly make a difference!” She listened politely. Then bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it back into the sea, past the breaking waves and said, “It made a difference for that one.” (Author Unknown)

We all have the ability to MAKE A DIFFERENCE. I sure got my wish today, I heard a lot of positive!

Valerie, you are such a Bikinis and Bifocals Woman!

Have you seen Valerie Bertinelli on the cover of People? Don't know how you can miss it, they have had it on the T.V. news stations all weekend. Now is she a Bikinis and Bifocals woman or what? She is 48 and is wearing a two piece bathing suit!

I am not saying that because she is wearing a bikini/two piece, I am saying this because she has the confidence and attitude to do this. I love her blog and her attitude towards life now. Isn't that what it is all about? Have the attitude towards life that is positive, fun and sexy. That is what the bikinis stands for in our logo - an attitude, not that you need to wear one to be one of us, but to have that attitude towards life.

What attitude is that? That at any age, whether you are 40'ish, 50'ish or beyond that you still want to feel good, look good, be sexy and have FUN! When you have a positive attitude about life, life just gets better.

And the Bifocals portion of our logo brings it all together with the reality of women our age. Yes there are medical issues we must deal with after 40, BUT that does not mean we cannot be bikini attitude women! So many women seem to lose their confidence as they age and hide behind plain and old. NOT ME.

If you take care of yourself (look at how Valerie's hard work payed off) and seek information that will help you stay healthy you can be sexy, healthy, look great and have FUN.

Bikinis and Bifocals is all about attitude and lifestyle. I love Valerie's attitude and wish more women our age understood that as well.

I don't have goals that include a bikini, but I do have goals that include looking good in my clothes that are stylish and sexy. You don't have to wear a bikini to do that. But thanks Valerie for showing everyone, women can be sexy at any age. They don't have to be rail thin and they don't have to be 20'ish. In fact our life experience and wisdom adds to our sexiness and sassyness!

Now, doesn't that make you want to pass up the candy bar and go exercise!

What is Torture? Let me tell you the true meaning of torture . . .

I was listening to the radio the other day as I was out running errands and caught the end of a news item where they were discussing the topic of what qualifies as torture. Although the discussion seemed interesting and spirited, I was busy planning my day in my mind. I am going on a winter vacation in February and was out running errands and picking up items for the trip.

One item I need for this trip is a new swim suit. As I started my look for such an item, and going thru the ordeals etc of shopping for a swimsuit, I quickly discovered the true meaning of torture. The discussion on the radio did not even cover the true meaning of torture as far as I am concerned. Later that day, I thought, huh, they need to talk to a 53 year old woman shopping for a swim suit in the middle of January, NOW that is torture.

In fact, let me describe for you my idea of a day of torture.

First of all, where I live, in January you have to wear several layers of clothing when you go out because the temperature is typically in the 20’s. Plus socks and more often than not some type of boots. Not the best clothing attire to wear when you are going to shop for something that requires you removing all or most of your clothes. Step one in Torture, set the stage!

Also, I would think that when torturing someone that the site should emulate and enhance the torture. What better venue than a brightly lit dressing room! They are torture enough when you are trying on clothes, but trying on a swim suit in the middle of January? UGHHH. Your skin is at its whitest, you are still fighting post holiday weight gain and to save time, you probably won’t take off your knee socks. What a picture – NOW that is torture.

In my life, torture is, being honest and getting a size larger than last year, getting in the dressing room, taking off all your clothes and when you try on the first suit, it is too small. NOW, that is torture. To add insult to injury, there is no sales girl around when you need one, so you have to put all your clothes back on to go out and get more suits, a size larger. THAT is torture.

As I was running my errands, I stopped in a small shopping center. As I parked my car, I noticed a shop that I had not noticed before. It was a swimsuit store, I don't remember the exact name. I looked at the sign a couple times and thought, hey, maybe this is fate, perhaps it was meant for me to go in there and find the perfect swim suit. So I bravely walked over and into the shop.

After I got inside the door I quickly discovered the shop was one that sold swim suits for “swimmers”, you know those ‘Speedo’ type suits that the professional swimmers wear. My first impulse was to quickly turn and run out. But there were a couple sales women looking at me and I did not want to look foolish. So I stepped further in and thought, “oh no, this is awful”. The sales girl walked over and asked if she could help me, with a tone and look on her face that said, ‘yeah right, this lady must be looking for directions’. More torture.

I muttered something like – “Do you sell swim suits other than this type, these all look like they are for “serious” swimmers? I’m looking for, you know, swim suits that are appropriate for lying around the pool and drinking margaritas”? Dead silence and she just looked at me. I quickly thumbed thru a rack and found a tankini and said “oh, yes, like this, I will just look around.” One thing I discovered the people who work in this store have NO sense of humor. People with no sense of humor towards life are Torture to me.

Looking thru the rack, I quickly found that the only “poolside appropriate” suits were ugly and almost screamed; NO I DON’T SWIM FOR FITNESS. Again, I just wanted to run out, but walked around sort of looking. When I noticed the one sales girl had gone to the back of the store and the other was helping a customer, I quickly walked out the door.
I had to chuckle to myself, as I walked away, another method of torture, put the person in a very uncomfortable situation and don’t help them at all – watch them squirm. TORTURE!

As I have mentioned in previous blogs, I love to shop. I love the hunt, I love to just look. But the one thing I DO NOT love to shop for is a swim suit. THAT is torture. That day I did discover a few stores had some suits in stock, I guess getting ready for spring break shoppers. But those I found where both cute and very small sizes or very ugly in my size! And to add to insult, many had those “skirts” on them. Are they kidding?!? All those skirts remind me of are those dancing hippos in the cartoons my daughter watched every weekend. Remember them? They had bathing suits with the little tutu skirts? I refuse to be reminded of those dancing hippos every time I put on my swim suit. How cruel.

Another shop I stopped in had suits but they wanted a small fortune for them. If I am going to spend a hundred dollars plus for a suit, it better make me look awfully damn good. When I put one on that is very expensive and it does not look any better than a cheaper one – that is torture. One site a friend recommended is travelsmith.com. They have some great items, to include swimsuits for travel.

I do have some nice swim suits I purchased last year; I have not had the courage to try them on yet. But - I do believe they will fit, I do believe they will fit, I do, I do, I do. So I have something to take on the trip. But it would be nice to have a new swim suit. I have never had many cover-ups etc, but perhaps now is the time to invest in some really cute cover ups. Now those should be easy and not torture to shop for. I am a woman; I will not succumb to torture!

Waitress, another Margarita please!!!
Stay warm,

2008 was great, what is your plan for 2009!

I don’t know about you, but as far as I am concerned 2008 was great. I do not waste my time crying over spilt milk in regards to what went wrong in my life, or as far as that goes in 2008, but I like to rejoice everyday about the things that went right and the possibilities of tomorrow. I am watching less and less TV news and listening to the radio news because all they want to talk about is the negative, what went wrong etc.

This is the holiday season, and since it should be a good time of the year, spend time this new years living in the good memories of the year. Don’t get me wrong, my life is not all perfect. I have as many challenges and setbacks as everyone on the street, I just choose to not let it determine my outlook and disposition on life.

As I have said over and over to many I encounter – you have two choices everyday – be positive or negative, which do you choose?

As far as 2009 is concerned, I am so excited. A new year with new possibilities. What could be greater? I view the New Year as a clean slate. A time to sweep out the old and bring in the new – new possibilities of great things to come!!!

I read an interesting article online the other day and have been thinking it about it since. I liked what it was saying about instead of New Year resolutions that focus on something negative, set goals towards something positive. The article said it is always easier to move towards something than away from something! So in other words visualize something positive you want to work towards, not something negative you want to work away from. Example, instead of working to lose weight – move away from being overweight etc, set a goal as to how you want to look, live, feel – in other words move towards something positive. This thought really got me thinking about the New Year and my plan for 2009.

I love the way things come together in my life. A couple years ago I discovered a thing called a Vision Board. That concept focuses around visualizing on what you want in life. In other words moving towards something. This concept as to how to approach the New Year is along that line. So this year I am working on my plan for myself, not just for the year, but a lifestyle that will carry on to my goals. Setting up towards the positive is a better indicator you will succeed. I have done this several times over the past couple years and it works. I will not do this for the New Year as I plan my 2009.

So, what are you plans for 2009? 2009 will be a great year, every year I am alive is as far as I am concerned. This year focus on the positive and see just how big an impact it will have on your life. Remember, some days it may be difficult, but make it part of your plan for 09 to be positive and move towards positive goals.

Some sites that help on this approach are of course our site www.bikinisandbifocals.com, but others are www.mydailyinsights.com, www.AsAManThinketh.net, www.johnassaraf.com and www.thesecret.tv to name a few.

Happy New Year!

How can anyone be anyone be in a bad mood when listening to Christmas Music?

I don’t know about you, but now is the time of year when I am in my car that I either pop in a Christmas CD in my car stereo or tune the radio to a channel that plays non-stop Christmas music. As I was driving around the other day running some errands, I was listening to one of my favorite Christmas CDs. Several cars were slow in moving on when the light turned green and there was a couple times some drivers almost cut me off or I observed something they did that was not too smart. But I realized, as I listened to that beautiful music, there was no way I could get upset. After all, how can you flip someone the bird or honk your horn in frustration when you are listening to Josh Groban sing “ Thankful “ or Martina McBride sing “It’s the most wonderful time of the year …”. I realized it is impossible -for me it is.

So, I had a thought the other day, perhaps if we all listened to Christmas music all the time, instead of “My sweetheart broke my heart and my dog died” type stuff, and we listened to music that speaks of love, family and giving selflessly to others we would all have a much better day. What a novel thought, huh! Listen to music that puts you in a good mood, or a sentimental mood, or a mood that makes you want to do something nice for someone! I love it.

I know, I know, my sensible friends are saying, “well, you can’t do that, everyone will get sick of that stuff, etc.” But you have to agree, it is a thought that has merit. Everyone wants to dwell on what terrible things might happen, but you know me, I want to look for the bright side or the positive that may happen. I have a motivational tape that talks about your control over your mood. At one point the speaker tell everyone to stand up straight and put a big smile on your face. He says “now don’t stop smiling, but at the same time I want you to try and be angry, try and think frustrating thoughts and get upset. The speaker went on to say, “it is difficult to be angry or get upset when you place yourself in a position of being happy, being positive etc.” That is the same with listening to this type music. Instead of listening to the news (and that is always depressing) or listening to broken heart type songs, listen to something that makes you feel good.

I have a little plague I purchased years ago, although it is a Christmas item, I leave it on my buffet or bookcase year-round, the verse on the plague goes like this –

“Every time a hand reaches out to help another …. That is Christmas.
Every time someone puts anger aside and strives for understanding … that is Christmas.
Every time people forget their differences and realize their love for each other …that is Christmas.

Everyday can be Christmas. Keep the spirit all year long, happy holidays. Be safe.

A different twist on giving thanks.

No matter how much you may try to avoid a holiday, no matter where you are or what you are doing, it is a holiday. The day seems different, the air, the way you feel. No matter what – a holiday is a holiday. I know that because I have had holidays that weren't quite the traditional holiday and ones that I wanted to forget. This year both my daughter and husband are away. I have also had holidays away from home or other major loved ones where sick, just to name a few out of the out of the box holidays I have had. And no matter how much I tried to avoid the holiday or the ache of an absence, it was the holiday. So this year, I have been thinking a great deal about thanksgiving and a different way of looking at this important holiday.

Instead of dwelling on what you don’t have or experiencing an event you don’t like, today, or any day you read this, turn everything around to a thank you. I got home this morning and the house was cold, and empty. Instead of complaining about the cold, I said a thank you that I have a furnace that works and the money to pay the bill. Instead of feeling lonely today, I am thankful I have an independent daughter who can think on her feet and not need me, a husband who is good to his mother (as well as all the women in his life) and a wonderful supportive family.

So today, instead of complaining about the dishes that need to be cleaned up or the mess the kids left this year, say thanks for all the people in your life that helped make the mess. And that they all have the abilities to eat and make a mess on their own.

As you get up to go to work, and most of us really don’t want to get up in the morning, whether it is to go to work or an after Thanksgiving sale, say thanks that you have a job to go to and the money to spend on a sale. Turn any possible negative thought into a thank you. Or look at that moment as a positive and say thank you. Other examples? While sitting in traffic, be thankful you have a car, enjoy listening to a song or enjoy the time alone with your child or loved one. Every day, every moment we have so much to be thankful for. Being thankful, again that attitude of gratitude, opens up so much for in your life.

If you have a roof over your head, clothes on your back and change in your pocket – you are richer than 95% of the world’s population. Today, and every day, say thank you for all the blessing you have – because we are all blessed in so many ways. It seems it is too easy to forget how very blessed we all are.

Thanks for reading my blog, my thoughts, and enjoy this holiday season no matter where you are or what you are doing. There are men and women today away from home protecting all that we have. Be sure to say a prayer for their safety and a thank you for all the sacrifices they make to protect our freedoms. Happy Thanksgiving.

What do you wear on a rainy day?

I don't know about you, but on a rainy day I look for a bright, colorful outfit to wear. It amazes me how, if it is raining, everyone thinks that is a call to be depressed and negative AND dress in dark/drab outfits. I like to shake things up a bit, so I look for something bright.

Color can help shape the mood you project for the day. If it is raining, do you automatically determine that your day will be a downer?

Where I live, we have experienced a long dry spell. When it did finally rain recently it was a blessing as far as I am concerned. BUT, when I got in the elevator the first day of that much needed rain, I was greeted by others who said, "Yeah right, nice day, it's raining" and "It would be a nice day if it weren't raining." I left the elevator thinking -are these people nuts? We have
gone how many days without rain? Plants and trees are dying, yards are like a dust bowl and they are complaining about rain? Inside I was jumping up and down with joy. In fact, I had forgotten my umbrella that day and actually did not mind walking to the car in the rain. To me, it was a blessing to be rained on after such a dry spell. All part of living an attitude of gratitude as they say!

I have to admit, being a product of our society, that most rainy mornings my first thought turn to my dark/black clothes. After all, it is raining! But years ago, a speaker touched on being in control of your attitude and discussed the phenomena of how when it rains people automatically determine they are depressed and it is a reason to be gloomy. The speaker suggested, next time it rains, wear something bright, and begin with that decision that your day/attitude will be upbeat.

So, after that fleeting thought of wearing something dark passes through my mind, my next thoughts are the words of that speaker. It is a wake of call of sorts that I am in control of my mood and outlook, not the weather. Why let some rain determine that I will be down for the day. Instead, I look for something bright and cheery.

Something I noticed, that when it is raining and I wear something bright I always get remarks from others who I encounter. I will get comments from others such as, "Hey look at you all bright and cheery today, or "You are the bright spot in our day," or "Wow, what are you doing with such bright colors on today?" If I have the time, I make comments such as, "Rain doesn't mean you have to be gloomy." "Or, I just act surprised that there is a reason to be anything other than positive for the day."

So next time it rains, select something bright, like the color of the flowers the rain will help produce, or select a colorful outfit and use that as a constant reminder that day that only you control your mood and outlook, not the weather, not others, but YOU.

Have a great day!

Save the Ta Ta's

I saw a bumper sticker the other day that said SAVE THE TA TA'S! I thought what a great bumper sticker. Get attention about a very important aspect of a woman's life with humor.

This month is breast cancer awareness month. And this past weekend was our area's annual Race for the Cure Komen Walk. What is so awesome to me is not just the women battling this terrible disease, but all the family members out there showing their support to the women they love. Saturday was a true testament of love. I saw men out there who have never been to anything like this, you could tell by the way they were dressed, but they were there as support to the women they love.

Love and positive support is such a strong drug. Optimism and a positive attitude say that they, as a team, will beat this. And that is so important to a woman. Probably in some ways more important than the drugs they take.

You know these ta ta's can bring down or stop otherwise very strong and intelligent men. I even say a guy with a t-shirt that said "I love boobs". Men can be so simple. I wore a rather low cut blouse the other day when flying to Chicago. Most times no one says a word to me, but this time I had several men strike up conversations with me and one offered to share a taxi! Wow these things are gold. I just wish I had these 34C's when I was 18, I would ruled the world!

This month make your appointment for your annual mammogram if you have not done so yet. Take care of yourself and save the ta ta's. They are a piece of art to me and your life may depend on it.

Pass some laws that really matter!

Most who know me, know, that I just can't help finding something funny to say about most situations, even about something as awful as this financial crisis currently going on. Some would say that is the sign of a sick mind, but I say you have to laugh to keep from crying some days!

I was just thinking yesterday as I was driving home and listening to the latest opinions on the "Bill" currently being passed, you know they should pass some things into law that really matter like:

- All garments must contain at least 2% spandex
- Botox injections are covered under our health insurance
- Plastic surgery is covered under our health insurance (dollar limit of course)
- All cosmetics are tax exempt (a necessity)
- No photos of women taken from behind will ever be published in the newspaper
- All shoe styles will have heel height options
- All research money will be devoted to Breast Cancer Research and a Diet pill that allows you to eat what you want, be a size 8 AND have no side effect!
Just to name a few!

I'll stop there, but I am on a roll here. I would love to hear what you think, but it should be on the light side.

You know, life sure sends us a great deal to worry about etc, but we need to step back, but things in perspective and find a way to laugh everyday.

I find many people complain, complain and get themselves into such a funk. There is always something to complain about. But doing that just put you deeper in a state that does not allow you to move on. Look at situations, make a decision to correct or accept and move on.

I am not saying what is going on in the country is not serious. Oh yes it is. But that is another blog. My point today is always find something to laugh at each day. It relieves some stress and helps open the mind to resolve the issues that need to be resolved.

And figure out a way to come up with some extra money for those necessities like botox, expensive extra lift bras, ...... ! Have a great day and find a way to laugh or make someone else laugh today!

Women who inspire me.

Of course there are those women who are famous who inspire me . . . Louise Hay (positive thinking), Ellen (her humor), Tori (her courage), etc. I can go on and on. But it is my friends and everyday women who are most inspiring and keep me going.

How can you not be inspired by women like Carol, who took a leap of faith, quit her job of 25 years and followed her dream. Or Angela who is so at peace and gains strength and inspiration from her faith every day that she is so poised and graceful. And then there is my stepdaughter who is probably the best mom I have ever witnessed and the greatest person despite all the challenges she faced growing up. I can go on and on. Everyday I am touched by a strong, inspirational woman.

Just the other night I was among some very awesome women. They have willingly and enthusiastically agreed to work with Kim and I on a dream of bringing together a group of women for a charity cause. They are all so awesome - Sabrina is so creative, Debi is so connected and Keta is so funny and has such a great attitude. And of course Kim inspires me everyday with her strong will and character yet caring and loving nature. You know you don't need to buy books or tapes, just look around you and you can find such awesome women everyday in so many ways who can inspire you.

I ran into a business associate the other day at a conference, we see one another about once a year. Her daughter has cancer, but she is very upbeat and keeps going with an attitude of winning this fight. How can you not be inspired by that. She never has a negative word or attitude about anything. Many who complain about trivial things need to take a lesson from her. She finds joy in every day.

We have two choices everyday - will you be positive or negative about your day, life or your thinking. Either "you have to do something - like live that day" or you "will do things, get to do an event and use your talents or just accomplish a lot in that day" The attitude selected will determine your success or not. Like today, I am going to accomplish a LOT! This blog was at the top of my list and I am about to mark that off. I am so excited about today, even the piles of laundry! Everything is an accomplishment each day. Look around you there is so much to be excited and happy about. Learn the SECRET today. I have and it has made the biggest difference in my life, just like all the awesome women I know who inspire me everyday in so many ways. Have a great weekend.

Just when you are about to quit - DON'T

Many great people have said, right before their greatest victories or successes they were about to quit, but for some reason kept going. So many people have ideas or dreams and give up too soon before they may have made them reality.

I have read many items such as the above, but have not had them hit home until this past year. I too have dreams and hopes and work very hard to make them reality. But I have to admit, there are days I want to quit. But, isn't it great when you get some encouragement out of the blue! It just takes a little for me and then I am fired up. Refueled to keep going. I guess the most difficult thing for me in life is my husband and his pessimistic outlook on life. Ahhhh, some days he makes me want to crawl in a hole and not come out. He is the Chicken Little of Kentucky. The government will be broke in 20...., the stock market fell so and so points today, and on and on. Dwelling on the negative, I think, is not healthy. Don't get me wrong, I love that man, he is a good father and husband. But he is too much into reality for me!! Or is it reality. IT may be his, but it is not mine. There are some days I say ignorance is bliss, if I don't know that something may fail, I keep going and it succeeds!

I am the dreamer and refuse to stop dreaming. I know there are days I want to give up on my dreams but lucky for me I get little signs along the way to keep going. I thank anyone and everyone who ever gives me an encouraging word, and sometimes you don't realize you have.

I heard several months ago, new businesses fail in the first two years. I refuse to be part of that statistic. Kim and I are so positive about what we are doing and believe in it. I think that is a big part of success, believing in yourself when no one else does. And that is difficult I know, believe me, how I know.

If you find yourself about to quit on something you are pursuing, stop and think about what you want and why. Go back to why you are doing it and keep that in the forefront. Also, don't miss an opportunity to get out and meet others, you never know when an idea or opportunity will come your way.

I just picked up a little newsletter we receive in the mail and there was an article about Louise Hay! If you don't know who she is, she is the mother of positive thinking and affirmations. It is great to see this type philosophy being written up in a newsletter that typically has items about medicines, stock and other money investments, inventions etc. It seems everyone is starting to realize in order to change anything in our life, we change our way of thinking. Not sure if my husband ever will, but that is another blog!!

I just got a very complimentary email about my blog. That was so great and has me re-energized to work even harder towards my dream. Don't stop dreaming - have a great day.

Believe and You Will Receive

As many of you know I am a true believer of the Book THE SECRET and its teachings and philosophies on life. It has made a big impact in my life over the past year.

One aspect is the – Believe and you will receive – approach. There is a lot to be said about that statement. Along with that belief you must have a positive attitude and center your thoughts on the positive aspect of what you want. Something I learned, the hard way, is if you say you want something and then focus your thoughts around the premise – “they probably won’t let me do that, or if they won’t give me that, or all the things that could stop or go wrong with the wish, that the wish will not come true. In fact all that negative energy just blocks your ability to focus and come up with the path to get what you want.

I put this all to test recently. It was not an overnight thing, but I did see the difference between the two approaches. I wanted something very much. I put that on my vision board, out there in my thoughts etc. But I found myself struggling with the negative thoughts of how others may block this, and centering a lot of negative energy on those people and issues. One day during this process I was listening to the book on tape and thought about my mixed message approach. So, I again, thought about what I wanted and every day repeated to myself, this will happen; those who are involved will make sure it will happen and I will get what I want.

Every time something negative crept in my mind about my dream, I acknowledged it and then forgot about it and did not go any further with any negative thoughts. When this happened I changed my thoughts to, it will happen, I believe it will. Well, after a few days, I found I was not bogged down with a lot of negative thought processes and what I did find that over time I started to have some great ideas as to how I could make this dream come true. Things I would have never have thought of if I had been spending all my time and energy thinking about how it was not going to happen. I know this may be hard to understand or realize, but it was a breakthrough for me.

In the car the other day, my husband asked me about the status of this request. He started in on, if they don’t do this, you should …… And all I said was, it will happen, they will do the right thing. When I got in the office that day, I had an email that told me everything I had wanted was approved! It worked and it can for you.
Read or listen to the book The Secret, or watch the DVD. There are so many other books on the market that are similar, and I can give you a number of others to read. But the common theme is ASK, BELIEVE, RECEIVE. This approach can have an impact on everything in your life.

It is not easy, it takes some work on your part to move to that mindset, but it can be done. Your thoughts create your life – create something positive.

Picture Your Day In Your Mind

I listen to books. I love to read, but just don't have the time to read all the books I would love to read, plus if I sit down long enough to read, it is usually at night and within a few minutes I am falling asleep. The greatest thing for me is now my ipod and books on tape. What a great way to multi-task!

I listen to books in my car on my commute to work. I very seldom listen to the radio anymore, the news and other talk is so negative, why bother. So I listen to books, and often times I listen to the same book over and over again. My favorite is "The Secret." I know, here she goes again, but I just can't get enough of that, it is so positive. There are many other books that give the same message, and I have many of those too, but this one is one I have multiple copies of!

Anyway, yesterday as I was listening, or perhaps half listening, because I had just gotten in my car and was beginning my commute and thinking about all I had to accomplish that day, the woman on the tape said "Image your day in your mind each morning, how you want it to be, what you want, etc." I listened to her for a while and realized, wow, that is so right. Instead of thinking, ahhhh, I have to do this, how am I going to do that. I should start off saying to my myself today I WILL ..... and image a perfect seamless day. I know, Polly Anna, but doesn't it seem that things go better when you are more optimistic about it?

I know I now say, I will get there on time, instead of I'm going to be late, and 99% of the time I get there on time or the time I set for myself. It sure relieves a lot of stress that way. So, today I am going to try it. I will image my day and all the things I will accomplish, instead of letting thoughts in my mind of how and why I won't accomplish them. I will let you know how it goes.
So far, my day has been great, it's Friday!!!!
