I don't know about you, but on a rainy day I look for a bright, colorful outfit to wear. It amazes me how, if it is raining, everyone thinks that is a call to be depressed and negative AND dress in dark/drab outfits. I like to shake things up a bit, so I look for something bright.
Color can help shape the mood you project for the day. If it is raining, do you automatically determine that your day will be a downer?
Where I live, we have experienced a long dry spell. When it did finally rain recently it was a blessing as far as I am concerned. BUT, when I got in the elevator the first day of that much needed rain, I was greeted by others who said, "Yeah right, nice day, it's raining" and "It would be a nice day if it weren't raining." I left the elevator thinking -are these people nuts? We have
gone how many days without rain? Plants and trees are dying, yards are like a dust bowl and they are complaining about rain? Inside I was jumping up and down with joy. In fact, I had forgotten my umbrella that day and actually did not mind walking to the car in the rain. To me, it was a blessing to be rained on after such a dry spell. All part of living an attitude of gratitude as they say!
I have to admit, being a product of our society, that most rainy mornings my first thought turn to my dark/black clothes. After all, it is raining! But years ago, a speaker touched on being in control of your attitude and discussed the phenomena of how when it rains people automatically determine they are depressed and it is a reason to be gloomy. The speaker suggested, next time it rains, wear something bright, and begin with that decision that your day/attitude will be upbeat.
So, after that fleeting thought of wearing something dark passes through my mind, my next thoughts are the words of that speaker. It is a wake of call of sorts that I am in control of my mood and outlook, not the weather. Why let some rain determine that I will be down for the day. Instead, I look for something bright and cheery.
Something I noticed, that when it is raining and I wear something bright I always get remarks from others who I encounter. I will get comments from others such as, "Hey look at you all bright and cheery today, or "You are the bright spot in our day," or "Wow, what are you doing with such bright colors on today?" If I have the time, I make comments such as, "Rain doesn't mean you have to be gloomy." "Or, I just act surprised that there is a reason to be anything other than positive for the day."
So next time it rains, select something bright, like the color of the flowers the rain will help produce, or select a colorful outfit and use that as a constant reminder that day that only you control your mood and outlook, not the weather, not others, but YOU.
Have a great day!
