Wow the holidays are over and here I am at the new year! Time flies. And like they say, the older you get the faster it goes! And how true. So, if time does fly by the best I can do is make the most of our time.
With the New Year I plan to have a New Outlook. Most of what I have seen lately has been from a positive attitude aspect. I vow to continue with such an attitude! It seems to me the only way to go.
A New Year and New Outlook is not a new concept, but a great way to start the year. An attitude of gratitude, be thankful for what you have and being positive is a great way to live.
One of the many reason I love visiting our home on the lake is we do not have cable TV!! Pretty primative! But one of the many great things about this is we don't spend a great deal of our time in front of the TV and all the negative news. I absolutely do not miss it! After returning from the lake this past week the fact that the negative press was missing from my life and the positive impact it had really came to my attention. Thus another reason for emphasizing the positive in life and focusing on a new way of thinking and approaching life.
Happy New Year. When we are given something new, we are given something with a lot of potential. It is up to us how we use that something new. Take the new year and make it the best. Have a great day.

Valerie, you are such a Bikinis and Bifocals Woman!
Have you seen Valerie Bertinelli on the cover of People? Don't know how you can miss it, they have had it on the T.V. news stations all weekend. Now is she a Bikinis and Bifocals woman or what? She is 48 and is wearing a two piece bathing suit!
I am not saying that because she is wearing a bikini/two piece, I am saying this because she has the confidence and attitude to do this. I love her blog and her attitude towards life now. Isn't that what it is all about? Have the attitude towards life that is positive, fun and sexy. That is what the bikinis stands for in our logo - an attitude, not that you need to wear one to be one of us, but to have that attitude towards life.
What attitude is that? That at any age, whether you are 40'ish, 50'ish or beyond that you still want to feel good, look good, be sexy and have FUN! When you have a positive attitude about life, life just gets better.
And the Bifocals portion of our logo brings it all together with the reality of women our age. Yes there are medical issues we must deal with after 40, BUT that does not mean we cannot be bikini attitude women! So many women seem to lose their confidence as they age and hide behind plain and old. NOT ME.
If you take care of yourself (look at how Valerie's hard work payed off) and seek information that will help you stay healthy you can be sexy, healthy, look great and have FUN.
Bikinis and Bifocals is all about attitude and lifestyle. I love Valerie's attitude and wish more women our age understood that as well.
I don't have goals that include a bikini, but I do have goals that include looking good in my clothes that are stylish and sexy. You don't have to wear a bikini to do that. But thanks Valerie for showing everyone, women can be sexy at any age. They don't have to be rail thin and they don't have to be 20'ish. In fact our life experience and wisdom adds to our sexiness and sassyness!
Now, doesn't that make you want to pass up the candy bar and go exercise!

More on Swim Skirts!
Wow, have I gotten a great response to my recent blog on torture and it’s true meaning. If you did not read my most recent blog, do so. It is about swimsuit shopping.
I received a tremendous amount of emails telling me how much it made them laugh and oh how much they could relate. Bingo on all counts. I love to make people laugh, and we all need to learn how to laugh more at life and ourselves. But it is fun to hear from all the women who can relate. It tells me that this is being read and being sought by women of my generation.
BUT, what is too funny is the number of emails and comments I have received concerning the section on skirt swimsuits. Either others replied to me or through a friend that they had a skirt suit. Sorry ladies, I just had to add that section to the piece. I have a friend who several years ago was discussing clothing for large women. She is so funny in her description of any event, and her story about thinking of the dancing hippos in regards to skirt swimsuits continues to pop in my mind every time I look at a swim suit with a skirt.
But I must admit, I too have skirt cover ups and a swim skirt. We own a boat, so there are times where I just don’t want everything hanging out for all to see, and it seems more and more there is more to see!! There was a time when I did not like anything but a two piece, any more fabric than that seemed like wearing clothes to the pool or beach. But as I have gotten older, those tan strips across my midriff are not cute! So I have moved over to the tankini and love them! Interesting how opinions can change!
On our recent cruise with several Bikinis and Bifocals women I made note of what type suits were around the pool. And believe me there are all types. Several women have noted to me there are some great sites to purchase suits, travelsmith.com, landsend.com and even victoriasecrets.com carries swim skirts!!! So ladies I apologize for the joke on the swim skirt, they are cute and can be sexy. Hey, even Victoriasecret.com had tummy control swim skirts, now that’s my kind of suit! I even found sites that sell really sexy suits that had thong swim skirts. Or, back to reality here, there are the suits with shorts that are cute if you need something to wear and look sporty such as some on suimsuitsforall.com or alwaysforme.com. There are so many to choose from I would venture to say that we can all find something for our needs and taste.
Of course there will always be those cute young bodies around the pool with the bikinis, or a few thongs that make us wish for our younger days. But then again there will always be those who show up at the pool and did not have sense enough to keep a cover up on! I believe they are put there to make us feel great and grateful about how we look. What did I read once, the number one reason for dieting was a class reunion? Well I think the number one reason for diet and exercise is a vacation that includes pool time - swim skirt or no swim skirt!
Have you found some great swim suits or sites that carry some great suits? Let me know, I would love to share with others. Have a great day!

Change your attitude and change your life.
Have you ever noticed how when one person gets upset and complains that many people around them will begin to take on that attitude? I witnessed that this week. I noticed so many women at a recent event who were so negative about their surroundings. When I see that I so often wonder how their life must be. In looking further you often find they are not happy in pretty much anything in their life. And you wonder why. If you have such a negative attitude about everything around you, most likely everything will follow that line of thought.
I try and make a concentrated effort most days to look for the better, smile and say something nice instead of negative. Most often, things really turn around to the positive for me. For instance, I was very upbeat and friendly to the hotel desk when asking for a delayed checkout time. Well, he said, that day was going to be a challenge, but yes, I could have what I requested. That kind, friendly attitude also got some extra charges taken off my bill. I questioned it, asked for some clarification, in a very nice manner, and after our discussion, the clerk offered to take some of it off. And that was something she did not have to do. How great is that.
Don't get me wrong. I encountered several wonderful upbeat women this week. They are so positive and have such amazing lives. And I believe that is why. They seek out the good, they give so much of themselves and they are so delightful to be around. How could anything go wrong for them? My wish is that those who are so negative, take a lesson.
Changing your attitude and outlook can really change your day. It certainly has changed mine.
That is why I love sites like the Secret and John Assaraf. They are so upbeat and encourage success in everyone.
Kim and I have witnessed so many people and successes based on this simple theory. Our good friend, Kathy Seibert, who we have mentioned as a big inspiration to us lived this way and was such a wonderful example and inspiration to everyone she met. We still, now that she is gone, bring her up in conversation as an example of just how much this can impact your life.
I love the little item we have on our site - Seven Ways to Restart Your Day. Some things to think about if you are about to let something get you off to the wrong start for the day.
As many of you know, I have a difficult time reading entire books, I just can't keep that focus, but as I go through magazines, and self help books, as well as the Internet, I find so many inspiring items that I reflect back on when I need a push in the right direction. Check out this short item I just mentioned above or looking into sights like the secret or Louise May. Attitude can make a difference!

Believe and You Will Receive
As many of you know I am a true believer of the Book THE SECRET and its teachings and philosophies on life. It has made a big impact in my life over the past year.
One aspect is the – Believe and you will receive – approach. There is a lot to be said about that statement. Along with that belief you must have a positive attitude and center your thoughts on the positive aspect of what you want. Something I learned, the hard way, is if you say you want something and then focus your thoughts around the premise – “they probably won’t let me do that, or if they won’t give me that, or all the things that could stop or go wrong with the wish, that the wish will not come true. In fact all that negative energy just blocks your ability to focus and come up with the path to get what you want.
I put this all to test recently. It was not an overnight thing, but I did see the difference between the two approaches. I wanted something very much. I put that on my vision board, out there in my thoughts etc. But I found myself struggling with the negative thoughts of how others may block this, and centering a lot of negative energy on those people and issues. One day during this process I was listening to the book on tape and thought about my mixed message approach. So, I again, thought about what I wanted and every day repeated to myself, this will happen; those who are involved will make sure it will happen and I will get what I want.
Every time something negative crept in my mind about my dream, I acknowledged it and then forgot about it and did not go any further with any negative thoughts. When this happened I changed my thoughts to, it will happen, I believe it will. Well, after a few days, I found I was not bogged down with a lot of negative thought processes and what I did find that over time I started to have some great ideas as to how I could make this dream come true. Things I would have never have thought of if I had been spending all my time and energy thinking about how it was not going to happen. I know this may be hard to understand or realize, but it was a breakthrough for me.
In the car the other day, my husband asked me about the status of this request. He started in on, if they don’t do this, you should …… And all I said was, it will happen, they will do the right thing. When I got in the office that day, I had an email that told me everything I had wanted was approved! It worked and it can for you.
Read or listen to the book The Secret, or watch the DVD. There are so many other books on the market that are similar, and I can give you a number of others to read. But the common theme is ASK, BELIEVE, RECEIVE. This approach can have an impact on everything in your life.
It is not easy, it takes some work on your part to move to that mindset, but it can be done. Your thoughts create your life – create something positive.

I don't wear a bikini!
I hear this all the time from women when I tell them about our company and web site. They immediately think negatively towards the word “bikinis” and say what they cannot do. This drives me nuts. Why do women do this to themselves? I am the type of person who does not take no for an answer. Yes, I don’t wear a bikini, have not for a long time, but I sure as hell have a bikinis attitude. After all, I can now afford those overpriced drinks at the hotel pool bar; I could not afford them back when I did wear a bikini!
There are days I could just shake many women I meet. Their thought processes are so negative, and it is particularly evident the most negative attitude they have is about themselves. I read a book once, “I’m o.k., you’re not o.k.” Boy what a powerful book in that it so easily explains how others in this world make themselves feel good by making you feel bad or viewing you as bad or less to make themselves feel or look good to themselves. When I came to grips with that, it made the biggest difference to me in understanding I how I have the power to either allow others to define my worth or I define how I view myself. I define my self esteem – not others. So, in my mind I wear a bikini, I may not on my body, but I think I am much sexier than I was when I wore a size 4/6 and had no boobs!
At this age and stage of my life I am so happy, and that makes me feel so much more confident and sexy. As we go around promoting our business, we start to see women slowly understand that they too should have the bikini attitude. They have that power, no one has the power to take that away. We had a young woman the other night tell both Kim and I, “I don’t view the two of you as over 50! That said a lot to us, to me it meant
she viewed us as young at heart, mind and spirit. That to me is such a compliment and says “I am a bikini girl, not a frump!” Women over 50 unite and show others what confidence and life experience can give you. Another reward for me is the money and power to pay for the over-priced drinks at the resort bar, and not give a care. Life is great, wear a bikini!

Smile, people will wonder what you are up to!
Remember that old slogan? As I practice my positive attitude choice everyday, I have started to make a focused effort everyday to walk around with a smile on my face. Walking thru the streets of Chicago yesterday I realized that I was probably the only person on the street with a smile on my face. (Don’t get me wrong I absolutely love Chicago and the people, it was rush hour and I was going the opposite direction than those going to the train station). And that felt great. But I also thought, I wonder if people are thinking, what is she up to!
It amazes me when you speak to people say at the cab stand in the morning etc and they look at you like you are from a foreign land. I know, everyone is not a morning person like me, but people need to learn to put a smile on their face with their makeup, when they shave etc. Hey, most people it makes them look younger, isn’t that enough to make you smile?!
I make a point to watch the people on the street last night while waiting outside the theater for my sister and mother. Boy, some people are really ugly when they don’t smile and they look sooooo unhappy. I guess if they knew how awful they looked they might try and change their expressions. Some looked so sad or even to the point that I thought boy, wonder what her story is, she looks like she’s been abused. But, in all reality it is probably the mode these people have moved in forever. You frown when its cold or the wind blows. Try smiling and it doesn’t seem so bad. Try smiling more and everything seems to change.
O.K., here goes Polly Anna again, I know, this seems so unreal. But it works. Attitude can make such a big difference in your day. If you start it with a smile on your face before walking out the door, I bet your day will go better. How can you be in a bad mood or say something cross if you have a smile on your face? Think about it, the people who have the negative words or cynical comments all the time, do they ever smile? The ones I know don’t. So, Smile, and make them wonder just what is she up to?

Spring is a season of hope!
I abosolutely love spring. The air is so fresh, the flowers are popping up thru the soil (in places I forgot I had flowers) and everything seems so fresh and new. It is a season that gives me such hope.
The other day I was pulling out of my driveway and the sun was coming up and I could tell everything was different, it was spring instead of winter. That feeling and realization gave me a real boost for the day. Having that type of feeling and attitude for the day made such a great difference in my day. I thought about it and realized I needed to make an attempt to keep that attitude as my spring attitude - to renew, refresh and keep a positive outlook.
In fact, this is going to be my time to really kick in my "new year" resolutions. I have to be honest on some of the exercise aspects of my goals I have been lack. But spring has given my goals a better meaning. Plus I went swim suit shopping the other day and that really gives you a new perspective on things such as exercise! Yikes!!!
So today is a new day, I am waiting for my ipod to charge up so I can go for a long walk and start my spring off new and charged.
The winter is over, well almost anyway, and today is a new day, make the most of it.
Later today and this weekend I will be adding items on the http://www.bikinisandbifocals.com/ website that deal with new beginnings, spring cleaning etc.

Your thoughts create your life!
"Your thoughts create your life" I love this phrase. It says so much. As I reflect back on my life I realize just how true it is. So many times in my marriage, work etc I thought too often on the negative and guess what I got in return? Negative events. Now that I reflect more on this phrase and its meaning, my days go much better and life is wonderful. Oh how much I wish we could teach our young children just how important positive attitude is. Make the most of everything and every moment.
I knew I had succeeded in this with my daughter when she had returned from a week at summer camp. Of course I worried about her the entire week while she was away from the protection of MOM, but I also wondered if she was having a good time at camp due to the fact it rained most of the week.
When she returned she was full of stories and energy from her fun at camp. After a full day of stories and sharing events and how she made various crafts etc, I finally asked her, "Melanie, did it rain while you were at camp this week?" She answer, oh, yes, it did a couple times. And went on and told me another story of what happended that week, never mentioning rain or how it even impacted her week! Wow, I thought, perhaps I have succeed in some way with this child in that she does not equate her good time based on certain criteria, she has fun and that's that. Some children I know would have let the rain determine their mood, the day etc. But not my Melanie, she had a great time and rain was part of it!!! I love this child, she enjoys life and she only lets good thoughts create her life. If she had believed that rain ruins an event, she would have let her thoughts ruin her week at camp. But no, she believed that camp was fun, and it was!
My best friend and I recently made an agreement with one another, if either of us starts on a negative rant about something, we are to just say "yes, your thoughts create your life" and leave it at that. Hopefully it will move us out of the negative and move to the positive thought processes. Or, sometimes, when I am alone and find myself thinking something negative about the future or an event, perhaps I should just say the name "Melanie" and remember how she views life!
Have a great day, mine is going to be great, it has been so far in my thoughts for the day!

Life Is So Short
Last week was really tough. I had two childhood friends pass away. In addition, a dear friend of mine lost her brother. That week really made me appreciate my past and the present.
How lucky I was to have such a great childhood. We lived in a middleclass neighborhood with a lot of kids. Every family had at least 4 or 5 children. We did not have much, but we had a great time and some great memories. Visiting the funeral home made me realize how fast time goes by and how quickly it can all be gone.
I am so greatful for what I have and where I am. My past helped mold my future. I think we often get so busy and don't connect with others as much as we should, or wish we should. It was a sad wake up call for me. There are a lot of things that need to get done around my house, etc, but they can wait, the people in my life may not wait or be there tomorrow.
Today I am so thankful for today - and all the people in it, those I see today and those I don't.

Never, NEVER, give up on a Dream
I have been listening to the "Secret" and they say, just when you are about to give up, when you are most discouraged, DON'T, because that is sometimes when you are closest to succeeding. How that is true! With this new business, I sometimes get tired or discouraged, but I remember those words. I don't give up and I keep fast to my dream, and you know what, it always seems to work out. Just when things slow down something happens to give me hope and renew my energy.
I wish my daughter would listen to these words and keep a positive attitude about people things and life. But that is easy to say when I have been thru it and have learned how true this all is. she on the other hand is young and not as trusting of how "things will work out, and have faith" works. In this way she is just like her mother! But wise all the same with everything we have taught her.
I say these words to so many women, yet so many women I know, I see their dreams not come true. How sad that is and also a defeat for me. Everything all comes back to why we are here and why we started this movement of bikinis and bifocals..
Our consultant asked us what do you want to do, well we are doing it. We want women to over come all the obstacles, right now it is our generation overcoming the negative attitude toward us as aging women. We are not old and we refuse to grow old!!!!
We are women hear us roar!!! Never Never give up.
I won't and I don't and you know, it all seems to work out. Keep the faith, have a positive attitude and IT WILL make a difference.

Never Too Late
This past year has been new beginnings for me in many ways. The main theme is "life has just begun" each day. Each day is a gift and life at 52 is great. This is my first attempt at a blog, and sharing my thoughts on life over 50 and much more. One thing I have discovered this past year is attitude is so important. It can change everything. I guess I am that glass half full person. Baby Boomers have changed history, our world and it is so exciting to be a baby boomer and in this age group. There are so many things I want to do and just not enough time in the day, and I think that is exciting. My best friend and I have started a movement, Bikinis and Bifocals, we think it displays the attitude and lifestyle of women our age. We want to feel good, look good and have a great time at this time of our life, BUT there is the reality of health related issues we must deal with. But you know what? Deal with it, go on, move on, life is short, they are temporary road blocks to a lot of fun and adventure. I have raised the kids, paid for the house, worked to build for retirement, now the time is for me!! And so far it has been great fun!
