The only two resolutions I plan to make for the new year are to live healthier and spend more time with friends.
As we age, it is more and more important that we live healthier. With rising cost on health care, etc, it is even more important to live healthier. I don’t know about you, but I would much rather spend my money on entertainment or new clothes than on expensive prescriptions and other medical needs. I get really frustrated with some of my friends and family that do the opposite. In fact, check out your insurance or company policy on preventive health. My health insurance is offering a health assessment tool that awards you a gift card for completing the assessment! Wow, making money and staying healthy, now that is a thought. If your employer or insurance company does not offer any help or initiatives, check out sites like RealAge. Found others? Share with the Bikinis and Bifocals Community.
Spending more time with friends is also very important for our health. At least I think so. I plan to make more time for my friends and less time for cleaning the house! We started the year off yesterday right – friends over for lunch and family over for dinner. Not that I will do that on a regular basis, but it is so great to see friends over the holidays, why not make an effort to do more throughout the year. I think it is sad at the end of visits we say, we need to get together more, and then the year slips away. Perhaps I will just send out random invites to groups of women for lunch, dinner or other random activity throughout the month. Not only is it better for your health to have others to connect with, it is a great source of information! I get the best advice from my girlfriends.
Here’s to a happy and healthier year!

How NOT to look Old, Lesson Three ...
As I savored those last few days of the holidays (like eating the last of the dips, cheese balls and other fattening items without guilt) I contemplated my New Year's plan for me, etc. I was thinking of all the things I should be putting on my "to do" list and of course thought of items I may write about on this blog.
I am continuously thinking about that article I mentioned I read about How NOT to look old and starting thinking of some of my rules or thoughts. The article focused on the young generation today and what they do, and how what we do seems "OLD" fashioned etc. But you know, I think one great way NOT to appear old is to be healthy. Those I know who look better than their age, look great etc, are typically very healthy. They eat right, exercise and take good care of them self. The return benefit is you don't look old, but great. Just look at some of the people who have succeeded in the Biggest Loser. They look so great as they take on a healthy lifestyle, lose weight etc.
So, my resolution as I start of new year, is to live healthy. In turn, I plan to look better too. I just purchased a Wii, and boy is that a work out. I am so competitive, just one more time! on that thing and before I know it I have been working out with my Wii and it is two hours later! I love it.
You know, being healthy can also save you money. Save you money on doctor bills, drugs etc. Taking pills for your ailments is not healthy, living a lifestyle that will eliminate them is.
So, let's outlive those smart ass young people walking around with their electronics, I say we spend their inheritance and enjoy life!!!! (My husband doesn't like that attitude, he likes the healthy one, but not the spending one!) Have fun, live life to its fullest! Be healthy this new year. Happy and Powerful 2010 to everyone!

Biggest Losers are Winners!
I don't know how it happened but I got hooked on this season's The Biggest Loser. It seemed that each week as I was cruising through channels in the evening, I would come upon the weigh in portion of the show. It got to the point, I make plans to see the show, some of it and witness the weigh in.
I have never followed this show before. But I love it when there are people who make themselves over. It is so amazing how people can change their lives. And to see how they look compared to how they looked at the start of the show! Amazing.
Another thing that was great this season, is the older contestants stole the show! See it is never too late to improve your life. Jerry showed us all, that if you change the way you eat and if you exercise more you can eliminate many health problems.
Here is a shout out for Helen, you are such a Bikinis and Bifocal woman! Congratulations and keep up the great work. You have all been inspiring to many.

I received the ultimate compliment last night!
Isn’t it funny when you least expect it, something turns out to be eventful? Every once in a while, something will happen that takes an event from ordinary to special. That happened to me last night.
I attended a community business association meeting last night. To be honest I almost cancelled on going about three times. Twice, in route, I almost took detours and thought about blowing the meeting off. But, I pushed on, as tired as I was, and kept the thought going that you just never know what lies ahead when attending something new.
Well, the group was very organized, informed and doing a lot of great things for the southwest area of Louisville, KY. I met some very involved and enthusiastic people who believe in their community – the Southwest Dream Team. This being the area I grew up, I was proud of their accomplishments and what they are doing for an area I love dearly and hold many found memories.
But the highlight of the night was definitely a conversation I had with a gentleman at the table I joined. We were discussing an old facility in that area that has made national TV, the old Waverly Hills Sanatorium, and was sharing stories etc we had of the now local attraction.
In the course of the conversation I was mentioning how I, as a school girl, volunteered at the former nursing home. One man at the table, kept questioning me and at one point was almost argumentative, as if challenging me that what I was saying was not true.
At one point, I said, “Seriously, that is what we did.” As if, don’t you believe me? He then said, no way, there is no way you are old enough to have done that! WOW, that was why he was challenging me? He didn’t think I was old enough to have been around when the place was open and in existence. I wanted to hug him! But, I laughed softly and said,”oh yes, I am more than old enough to have volunteered there”. He just looked puzzled and said again, “no way, that would have been back in the ……
Anyway, I left there last night reviewing in my mind the events of the meeting, but realized as I went through the highlights, that the best part of driving all the way to that meeting was getting that ultimate compliment! After a long day, tired and over committed as usual, it was great to get that boost from a stranger with a comment that conveyed he thought I was younger than I am!!!!! Its the small things that make me happy.

Break an old habit, start a new habit
Well, I have come to the realization I am going to have to change one of my beloved old habits and start a new habit. I just hope I love it as much. That old habit is fixing my morning coffee, sitting on the couch, sipping coffee, watching the morning news, and easing into the day. I love starting the day that way. I am all alone in that section of the house, all the other members of my family are asleep and it is my time. I love it. I know, pretty simple, but hey, I love that time of the day. Any many times it is 5 a.m. or earlier.
Well, now you ask, what am I going to change? I am going to now start my day with brewing some coffee, have a few sips and slip down to my office and put in an exercise tape, exercise, and at the same time watch the early morning news. Sure doesn't sound as much fun to me, but I have decided I really need to try and start my day this way. I am not getting any exercise during the evening so I have decided to shake things up.
I have to admit, this morning it was o.k. I got through it, but I did not get started as early as I wanted and I got to work later than I prefer. But hey, at least I exercised. And you know, I felt better today. I think this may start my day off better and hopefully help get me back into a regular exercise routine. If I can have a habit of not exercising, I hope to now start a habit of morning exercise. I have resisted giving up my old morning routine. There have even been some mornings I have sipped coffee and watched various exercise programs! But looking over my day and what would be a good time to exercise, etc, I kept coming back to the morning hours as a possibility. So here I am, starting a new habit.
I have typically been a person who exercises regularly, walks a lot etc. But lately I have really fallen away from that. Recently, I have been thinking about this a great deal. Making a decision to make a change is the first step. Now I just need to stick with it and change my mind set about the day. I am also working on my mindset of focusing on eating right.
I find a lot of inspiration in various websites, articles, magazines etc. Several have been on our site, such as "Exercise Buddies", "Joint Friendly Workouts" and many others in our Health and Wellness Section. Another thing I am doing is keeping a journal. So we will see how this new habit goes and if it becomes an old habit. I will keep you posted on my progress.

With all the running around I do ...
As I was driving home Friday afternoon, my mind was wondering over some past and future events and, as so often I do, my thoughts led to something totally off the topic. I was thinking how busy I am, how I am always running around involved in something, and I thought "with all the running around I do, you would think my pants wouldn't be so tight!"
Like so many women my age I am fighting the battle of weight gain. It is not like I do nothing and the cause is inactivity etc. My life is quite the opposite. I am constantly going someplace, juggling a busy schedule etc. But now I also have to juggle the dilema of what pants fit this week!!! My choices of late are getting smaller and smaller.
Thinking about this issue, I had to admit to myself, my eating habits have probably contibuted to this problem.
One thing that really impacts my eating habits, and in turn the number of pants in my closet that fit, is this busy lifestyle. I don't' like to cook and when I am running (busy I mean, I hate to RUN), the last thing I want to do is cook. So I have found myself eating fast food more (yuck) and snacking for meals at home. I know, not good and not good for my pants issues.
So today is the first day of my eating better pledge. I guess as long as I at least have this on my mind and make a better effort it will help. At least I can tell myself that. What I know I need to do is exercise more. But like I said, I am running around all the time doing so much, it s difficult to actually find time to exercise. But yesterday I actually put in my 2 mile walking DVD and did that program. Proud of me!!
So here's to all the busy women I know. Take time for yourself, eat better today and hopefully more pants in the crowded closet will fit!!!
