Isn’t it funny when you least expect it, something turns out to be eventful? Every once in a while, something will happen that takes an event from ordinary to special. That happened to me last night.
I attended a community business association meeting last night. To be honest I almost cancelled on going about three times. Twice, in route, I almost took detours and thought about blowing the meeting off. But, I pushed on, as tired as I was, and kept the thought going that you just never know what lies ahead when attending something new.
Well, the group was very organized, informed and doing a lot of great things for the southwest area of Louisville, KY. I met some very involved and enthusiastic people who believe in their community – the Southwest Dream Team. This being the area I grew up, I was proud of their accomplishments and what they are doing for an area I love dearly and hold many found memories.
But the highlight of the night was definitely a conversation I had with a gentleman at the table I joined. We were discussing an old facility in that area that has made national TV, the old Waverly Hills Sanatorium, and was sharing stories etc we had of the now local attraction.
In the course of the conversation I was mentioning how I, as a school girl, volunteered at the former nursing home. One man at the table, kept questioning me and at one point was almost argumentative, as if challenging me that what I was saying was not true.
At one point, I said, “Seriously, that is what we did.” As if, don’t you believe me? He then said, no way, there is no way you are old enough to have done that! WOW, that was why he was challenging me? He didn’t think I was old enough to have been around when the place was open and in existence. I wanted to hug him! But, I laughed softly and said,”oh yes, I am more than old enough to have volunteered there”. He just looked puzzled and said again, “no way, that would have been back in the ……
Anyway, I left there last night reviewing in my mind the events of the meeting, but realized as I went through the highlights, that the best part of driving all the way to that meeting was getting that ultimate compliment! After a long day, tired and over committed as usual, it was great to get that boost from a stranger with a comment that conveyed he thought I was younger than I am!!!!! Its the small things that make me happy.
