In the last presidential election I was standing in line to vote and the man in front of me said something like, "can you believe this line." I looked at him and said, "I don't know about you, but I am glad there is a line. There should always be a line to vote in this country. When no one comes out to vote it is a shame."
Of course he just looked at me and turned around. Well, what did he expect me to say, "I wish there was no line, I don't want to stand here???" People in this country want everything to be quick and easy. But, you know what, when it comes to showing what we believe and what we want, you may have to stand in line and be inconvenienced. Is that too much to ask?
If you have to change your routine next Tuesday then explain it to those involved. Such as your children, so that they know this is important to you. Do you have to take them to school a little earlier so you can make it to the polls and then to work? Explain that to them and how important it is to exercise this right. Children remember the crazyiest things, and hopefully they will remember the important things you do and represent.
In years past, when the opportunity was there, my husband and I always took our daughter with us to vote. We wanted her to see that voting was important. When she became eligible to vote, she immediately registered, without prompting from mom and dad. In the last presidential election I had my granddaughter with me. After that man made the comment to me about the long line, I turned to my granddaughter and explained to her how important it was to vote. She being only 6 at the time, I'm not sure how much of an impression it made. But I could tell by the look on her face she knew Nana was serious about something!
Every election is important. Unfortunately the crazy TV ads we have to endure sure make it seem otherwise. If you are not a registered voter and cannot vote in this upcoming election, then make it a priority to register soon, it is a very simple process. If you are a registered voter, make arrangements to VOTE next Tuesday.
We are so blessed in this country to have the rights we have and we need to exercise those rights and make known what we want and expect. Vote next Tuesday for the candidates of your choice. God Bless America.
