Today was the Komen Race for the Cure here in Louisville, Kentucky. Each year I help my friends with the registration booth. This year the weather was perfect and the turnout was unbelievable.
I love to see all the women and men who support this event. There are, of course, the women fighting breast cancer, but it is so inspiring to see all the people who come out to support the women they love. The turnout always includes those who get very creative with their dress to show their love and show support to the the women in their lives.
So many of those who turn out have never even participated in an organized walk or race, but this event brings them all out. It is a great event where you don't have to be a runner, or very athletic. All you need is the desire to show others you care and are there for support.
My mom was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and came through the surgery etc with flying colors. My mom is awesome and a fighter. I have cousins, aunts and friends who are all fighting this disease at various stages, but keep a positive outlook towards life and winning this fight.
Each year as I work this event and see all these women, I am so grateful for those who support the cause, but pray that some day we won't need this event. That some day we will beat this and get rid of this disease that is invading so many lives. After all, isn't that what it is all about? Some day we will have a day that celebrates the fact that we beat this and are celebrating it's decline.
Take care of yourself, get your annual checkup/mammogram and encourage other women to do the same. If you have questions, websites such as Breastcancer.org, Komen.org and National Breast Cancer.org are just a few that are a great start.
Big or small, let's save them all!
