Our youngest daughter is spending the fall semester in Germany this year. And, being my daughter, she has far too many items she wants to take and too little suitcase space. She could never back pack across Europe.
My husband and I are going over later for a vacation and will see her a few days while in Europe. He made the comment the other day, "well, with international flights we each can take two suitcases, we don't each need two suitcases, we can take items over in the second suitcase for her."
WAIT JUST ONE MINUTE. I have sacrificed for that child from the time I was diabetic while pregnant and did not get to eat one sweet item, stayed up nights with her when sick, gave up most of my vacation days each year to be room mother, attended field trips and rode those awful school buses, purchased her items and not myself and NOW you want me to give up one of my suitcases that I could use for packing for a two week vacation in Europe? Sorry, but I draw the line there. I can only sacrifice so much in a life time!
My husband sees essentials for a trip as being enough underwear for each day, a couple pairs of slacks and some shirts. Yeah, right. I need to be prepared for any occasion, after all I was a girl scout leader and always told the girls to be prepared! One suitcase for Europe is really cutting into my packing options.
Plus you always have to have extra room in the event you want to bring back items, right! Just thinking ahead. So, give up one of my suitcases? I told my daughter, I love you, but I may have to draw the line here. Well, I got that doe eyed look from her and her smile that says, my mom is crazy but I love her. Now I am trying to figure out how I can give her half the second suitcase space. What a mom will do for her children!!
